The seven foot statue was created by sculptor David Annand following several years of fundraising by the Marie Stuart Society. It was unveiled on 25 April 2015, and gifted by the Society to Historic Scotland.

It is one of only 22 statues of female figures in Scotland, 13 of which are of Queen Victoria. Rather surprisingly, although it is over 430 years since her death, this is the first statue of Mary in Scotland. She is depicted holding the Bible and rosary beads that would play a major part in her downfall - many people were uncomfortable with her role as the Catholic Queen of a Protestant country.
