Outlander's "Craigh na Dun" near Kinloch Rannoch.
In the TV series, this tree-topped hillock is topped with a mystical stone circle, and touching one of them transports World War Two nurse Claire Randall back to 18th century Scotland where she becomes involved in the Jacobite risings.
The TV series has returned to this location on several occasions. In reality, the "stones" of Craigh na Dun are plastic props which are removed when filming is completed. There is a stone circle on the hill, however, but each stone is only about 20cm high.
Craigh na Dun in Outlander's opening titles Picture used for illustrative purposes only |
The famous photo of the stones used in Outlander's opening titles is taken from around 90° to the left of this picture, with the tree that is growing at an angle appearing towards the right. However, there is an unsightly gap where the "stones" should be so I chose to picture it from the west instead.
The mountain in the background in both pictures is the mighty Schiehallion, famous for its distinct conical peak when viewed from the west, and for the 18th-century "Schiehallion experiment" to determine the weight of the world. The experiment required an accurate survey of the mountain, which introduced the concept of contour lines, now used as a standard in modern cartography.
