Looking across to the Five Sisters Bing from Livingston.
The Five Sisters, properly known as Westwood Bing, was formed from the spent shale of the Westwood Oil Works, set up in 1941 to satisfy World War 2's increasing demand for oil. The shale was dumped on one of five places, depending on the direction of the wind. As the bing expanded, it engulfed Westwood House, a mansion house near West Calder.
Westwood Oil Works closed in 1962, and the bing is now a protected industrial monument. As it is slowly reclaimed by nature, it has become a valuable natural habitat, playing host to several rare or protected species.
