Barges moored near Lochrin Basin, Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, at the eastern terminus of the Union Canal.
This used to be a very industrialised part of Edinburgh. Goods such as coal, lime and fruit and vegetables were brought in from West Lothian and Falkirk, and "nightsoil" - basically human excrement collected from the city's privies - was transported back to West Lothian where it was put on the fields
All of the stone for Edinburgh's New Town was brought in from West Lothian by canal, and was unloaded here.
