Initially owned by the Martyn family in 1478, the castle has passed through the hands of various families, including the Drummonds, the Livingstons and the Hopes. By the 1850s, it was being used to house farm workers following the construction of nearby Hopetoun House.
By the 1920's, the house had been abandoned and was falling into a state of disrepair. In 1988, work commenced to consolidate the outside of the building, including replacing the roof and inserting new windows and window frames. The inside of the building remains unsafe, and access is not permitted.
Despite this, the building was used in series 1 and 2 of the Starz TV series, Outlander, as the outside of Lallybroch, home to Jamie Fraser.
